LaughStrong--the goal, the story

LaughStrong is the foundation I formed to raise money for cancer (well, not FOR cancer... Cancer is actually doing fine without our money) . The money is to FIGHT CANCER-- through research, and by helping those who are diagnosed continue chasing their dreams.

LaughStrong will hold comedy fundraising events, sell merchandise, take donations, and brainstorm on any idea that could possibly fight cancer. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let us know.

When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, I was living my dream of being a stand-up comic. Quickly the medical bills started piling up. Luckily, I had SOME insurance. But even with it, I couldn't afford the amount that wasn't covered. Most comedians don't have insurance. I suspect most people chasing their dreams go without insurance at some point. With the debt escalating, I had to consider quitting comedy and finding a job that would start making more of a dent in the bills. I quickly realized if I chose that direction, cancer would have already beaten me. If you stop chasing your dreams, you are already dead.

So with the full support of my friends and family I continued living my dream and paying as much as I could to those I owe. However, the whole experience has made me realize how many people out there probably feel they have no choice in their dreams when faced with cancer, or any other disease.

So I decided to start a foundation that would:

1) Start raising more money to find a cure for cancer

2) Eventually be big enough to assist some patients whose dreams might otherwise be cut short by their diagnosis.

In short, I hope this grows into a kind of adult "make-a-wish"-esque program. I appreciate your help in getting there.

Here at the beginning, I am partnered with The Walter Payton Cancer Fund. This fund has the highest percentage of donations that actually go to research (i.e. lowest administrative cut).

The whole name and idea was of course inspired by Lance Armstrong's LIVESTRONG foundation. I joke about Lance, but I am one of the millions inspired by his story and courage. However, I still think our black wristbands look a lot cooler.

Thanks for your help and interest. If you would like to help in any way, or need help with a fundraiser, please contact me. SM
